Associates Research Trust Uganda (ART-U) is a legally registered research trust under the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development and a non-profit organisation in Uganda since 2013.

Our mission

Our mission is to promote equity and justice for vulnerable populations through data-driven research that informs policies and practices in the land, agriculture, extractives, and natural resource sectors.

Our goal

Our goal is to elevate traditional knowledge and practices of local communities by co-creating evidence-based research solutions to contemporary challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource extraction affecting land and resource rights of vulnerable groups.

Our Program Areas

The Land Voices Initiative:

Amplifying the voices of stakeholders in Uganda’s land sector through evidence-based research to inform, influence, and implement land policy reforms that lead to equitable solutions and results.

Current Actions

Designing and executing a program of action research in partnership with vulnerable communities across Uganda’s land sector.

Organising and facilitating strategic dialogues, policy roundtables, and policy options feasibility studies to engage policymakers, civil society, and other stakeholders.

The Deeds of Empowerment Program:

Enhancing tenure security for vulnerable women by facilitating the delivery of their land registration documents and transforming their lived experiences into evidence for functional tenure security.

Current Actions:

Providing targeted logistical support to vulnerable women to help them navigate time-consuming bureaucratic processes required to collect their land registration documents.

Implementation of a participatory research methodology to systematically collect, document, and analyse the barriers, including procedural limitations, and other gendered challenges women face throughout the land titles/ certificates delivery process.
